Why do drivers from Maryland speed like crazy and drivers from W. Virginia drive so slowly.

Have you been to West Virginia? It is hard to find a straight stretch of highway to speed on. As for Maryland, the state is so heavily policed they cut loose as soon as they get in another state.

IIRC the speed limit in maryland is 70, so if you are used to the 65 limit you might think they are flying

I've always thought Ohioans drive like they're asleep behind the wheel. Must be that whole area-- except we PA drivers are good drivers. :D

95 in VA and MD is 65mph.
495 (local beltway) is 55mph.
There are parts that 495 and 95 share the same road and the speed limit is 55mph.
270 is 55mph until you get near frederick going north and it is 65mph
695 (local baltimore beltway) is 55mph
66 is 55mph until you get out way west and I think it changes to 65mph

That covers most of the major highways in and around DC Metro Area

I grew up in Maryland (live in Northern VA now), and I am guilty of the signal thing when no one is around me. When in traffic I use it to let people around me know what I am about to do. But when there is no traffic I see no reason to use it... As for average speed, I stick to about 70mph until I hit the 65mph parts and go up to 80mph. It's about the average speed of the lefter lanes.

humm i must be thinking of WVA then because im pretty sure its 70 there. this is on 81, used to drive it from PA to VA in college and it went to 70 in either Maryland of WVA both of which you are only in for like 10 miles

WV has speed limits of 70 on some highways. I don't think MD does anywhere.

I agree that Maryland drivers are terrible, though.

I drive 5 over and use my blinker thank you. Ohio now those are some crappy drivers and since I live right on the border I get to put up with them all the time. Wv does have a lot of old people and that maybe your speed problem.

I live in MD and I'm not a bad driver. Your theory is flawed.

Umm, Maryland drivers regularly hit 75-80 MPH on I-495, I-95 and the Washingon - Baltimore parkway. The speed limits on these roads are 55 MPH, 65 MPH, 55 MPH.

If anything, MD drivers speed more in MD than they do in VA or other states.

Some days I'll leave Baltimore at 5AM and maintain a steady 80-85mph all the way down 95 to the DC beltway, then I'll go 70-80 on that around to Bethesda . Takes me 30-35 minutes, haha. Baltimore to Bethesda in half an hour.

I can vouch for this...

In Southern WV, we fly. I think it is to piss off all the Virginian's and their ridiculous traffic laws.

Driving here in MD is like being in prison. You've got to go around like you own the road. If they think you're weak, they'll run right over you. And if you're too slow, you'll get slammed up the ass!

I've got little experience with Marylandians(?) so I can't really comment.

I share the previously expressed disdain for Ohio-based drivers. Either they ride your butt as if they've caught on fire and you're their only hope...OR...the just cut you off with no indication of knowledge that the stalk on the left side of their steering wheel makes a light on the outside of their car blink, indicating a desire to change lanes in that direction.

Virginians are damn near as bad, especially around Bluefield and Princeton on 460. Butt-riding, non-signaling, just-plain-rude individuals. Out of the car, they're all extremely nice people IME but behind the wheel...ugh.

Then again, I HATE most of the slowpokes in this general area. The population, as theorized earlier, is typically older and tend to dislike speeds in excess of 3mph. They prefer to idle uphill but sometimes the car just won't do it without a poke at the throttle :D

I used to make the drive from Baltimore to the New River Gorge in WV several times a year. I hated driving I-70 in MD because the speed limit was 65 and there was way more traffic. Once you got into WV, the limit went up to 70 and there was much less traffic on I-68 to I-79.
