Why do dogs like it so much

Our puppy, West Highland Terrier, seems to love it when we scratch his belly area. He just automatically turns over and enjoys the session. I assume it's the same for any other dog.

Why're they like that, though? They ignore it when you scratch their backs, but belly, it's a full-on pleasure session...

my guess is they don't care so much on teh belly scratch as the fact they are getting attention.

I read somewhere that dogs enjoy it because their belly rubs against another dog when humping. Doesn't explain why a female dog enjoys it though. Similar physiology, I guess.

I think it's the fact that they can't scratch their belly. It's like us getting our back scratched.

My Aussie love having her belly scratched. I honestly think it has to with how a dog would show submission to an alpha.

I've had two female dogs, current one is a Lab Aussie mix, and strangely, we don't necessarily "scratch" instead mostly pet the belly.

I've always went with the submission route, because yes, canines tend to HATE being on their back with their underbelly exposed, and non-domesticated canines really don't do it unless showing submission to the alpha male or female. I'd say it seems to be more females submitting to alpha female, because male dogs tend to despise the concept of submitting to other males.

But, our little female aussie is strange. She shows submission, but I think she's mostly screwing with out minds or using it to gain more attention. She's an attention whore, and is our shadow to the extreme, very attached to us. However, she also loves humping, and she's been spayed. I'm pretty sure she wants to be an alpha, and at times we probably give her mixed signals into thinking that's alright.

My dog doesn't seem to care for his belly to be scratched. He likes being scratched at the top of the tail where his backside is more.
