Why do doctors say, burn 3500 calories, lose 1 lbs?

It doesn't make sense, if carbs and proteins are 4 calories/gram, and fat is 9 calories/g, then wouldn't one think that to lose a pound of fat, you'd have to expend (0.4545453 kg/pound) * 1 pound * 1000 grams/kg * 9 calories/g = 4090 calories?

Maybe I'm doing the math wrong or something. Thanks for reading.

Not all calories are created equal of course. Sugars and Proteins get turned into fat inside the body during digestion.

maybe its the calories per pund of body fat and not calories per pound of the food you eat, your body processes the food you eat and converts it into a specific form of lipid, that is what they are most likely refering to.
