why do crunches almost make me pass out?

whenever I do crunches, blood quickly rushes to my head and my face turns bright red and I feel like I'm going to pass out.

am I doing something wrong?

take it slow and easy.

but I mean I can keep going for a long time after I start feeling like passing out (I start feeling that way after about 10)...I usually just stop because I think my body is probably trying to tell me something if my face is burning up.

and to clarify, I'm doing the kind where keep your legs up at a 90degree angle without any support/backing for your feet

Shallow, quick breaths. If you hold your breath during crunches you're killing brain cells that you presumably would have killed some other way, but you don't want to kill them in the first place.

You might want to try getting an exercise ball and doing crunches on that - easier on your back and it lets you breathe. Out of curiosity, are you doing this to burn off energy or as part of a workout routine? That might explain it.

It's a neck excercise, not abdomen.

It's only a neck exercise if you put your hands behind your head and pull yourself up. If your hands are kept folded across your chest, it's actually works your abdominals fairly effectively. Werd up.

and yes, make sure you're breathing properly.

1) you're way way way WAY wrong
2) from your pic, I can see you're not in to crunches anyway
