Why do crt tv's have the little extra pixels on each side?

I have seen this on a few tv's. On the side of the actual picture about half way up their is one extra pixel on both sides. Anyone know what this is for?

I used to make TV tubes. They're used for calibration and alignment when the mask (the screen behind the glass) is inserted into the glass and matched with the "color gun" (the emitter on the back of the tube).
