Why do cops bother asking...

Why bother? I guess they don't want to come up to the car and say "Hi, how are you? Fine day isn't it?". Is this the best they can come up with? I just don't see the purpose. I suppose it is because they want to either catch you lying or have you admit your guilt.

BTW, I was speeding, but had cruise set for 18 over which usually is fine on I-95. Stupid cruise on the Honda CRV I'm using (not mine, I don't normally use cruise ever, cruise can kill) downshifts and takes me a few MPH over what I have it set to whenver it gets to the slightest hill... getting me into the over 20MPH bracket that is over $200 and 4 points (lower speed is 3, right?).

What a pain in the ass. At least my work which up until latelly wasn't paying my bills is now offering overtime. I will be working 7 days this week.

That's it in a nutshell. You can't win, so it puts you at a disadvantage from the start.

Probably so they know what areas their customers are coming from and they can target their advertising better.

I've been pulled over a LOT btw (when I was younger & drove faster), and have only been asked this once, maybe twice. It doesn't seem to be the norm. I was actually at a point where, to properly do their jobs, the officers pulling me over would have to take me in, as I couldn't get any more points on my license and keep it. Instead they'd give me tickets for not wearing a seatbelt, or having an air freshener hanging from my rearview obstructing my vision. A little politeness goes a long way, most police officers are good people. At the time I was angry about getting a ticket for that sort of thing, especially the air freshener one.. but looking back I can see I really owe them. Luckily for me I held my tongue.

Try this next time:

Cop: I pulled you over for speeding; do you know how fast you were going?

You: If I guess correctly, do I get to leave without a ticket?

I've done this twice. First time, cop laughed his ass off and let me go. Second time, cop pulled me out and frisked me and gave me a ticket.

That's a 50% success rate!! 😀

I dunno .. being felt up by a latent homosexual with a gun ..

I'd call that a 50% failure rate

If they clock you at 5 over in a 45 and you say I think about 55 or so, that is an admission of guilt and the ticket is for 10 over. A lot of speedometers are a little off, especially at higher speeds, so you may think you are going 10-15 over and only going 7-10 over, the point is you know you are breaking the law and you think that it is by 10-15.

I've been pulled over once in my driving career, but if I get pulled over the 2nd time I'm definitely gonna try that.
Most likely he'll probably give me a ticket for being a smart ass.

You have to say it with a big smile on your face and a chukle...but yet with a look of humility on your face....kinda like trying to patch things up with the GF after you really mess up. 🙂

I got this one once:
You in a rush to get home?
Mind you I lived right accross the street, and was going less than 10miles over the limit.

My answer was, "No, not really". Which was honest.

next time you get pulled over in a small town, and the officer asks why are you in a hurry? Tell him: I was headed to the station to make a donantion to the policemans ball. If he isn't quick he will say, The police don't have balls.

<----Is attending the Police academy currently, only 18 weeks to go.

My dad went over 20mph on a 60mph Montauk (NY) highway. He had an immunity card though, (those good patron card Policemen hand out) but the police officer took that away. 😡

At least we didn't get a ticket.
