Why do cheap cars have to look so ugly?

I understand that there's practically no thought that goes into them, but still, you'd figure the car manufacturers would make it look semi-appealing.

I don't believe that for a second. Sure, maybe it would increase costs by .1% to make a car look much better, but we are not talking about doubling the price.

Expensive cars can be ugly, too. Check out MIKEMIKE's Tahoe thread and the Escalade.

because the main issue with cheap cars is WHERE to cut costs, if you cut costs in frame and other materials, you lose crash saftey, but if you cut it on the inside you only lose the "expensive" look and thats what you need, a cheap looking car, hyundai has however mastered price cutting, or bargaining and can make cheap cars look more expensive, where they cut corners so far is unknown, but in a few years we might find out.

I know this forum is full of Mazda fanbois, but I actually think the 3 and 6 designs are hideous. Ugly grill, ugly headlights, nasty clear taillights, and terrible lines. It would be nice if Ford brought the EuroFocus to the US instead of ditching us with the Mazda.

Two Korean cars..... hmmm ;)

The Mazda 3 starts out fairly cheap, although it gets expensive. I just want to know when Ford plans to bring the Euro Focus over here.

If Ford sold the Focus RS here in the states (the WRC version, which they currently don't even sell it in Europe, but it's on the Euro platform) at a reasonable cost, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. 300 bhp AWD in a small hatch.

uh....designing the chassis of a car is a different engineering team. It does cost money.

Not too many I can think of, Opel GT, Fiero, some of the smaller British sports cars like the Triumph Spitfire.

if you consider cheap only under 10k there are very few cars that are actually under that category. No competition = ugly. They say to build an good compact car is much more challenging than a sports car or a luxury car. Because in latter case you know you build for specific kind of people with specific needs and you know what style they like. With cars like honda civic/focus/neon you have to consider practicality, looks, economy/hp ratio, weight, all different kinds of stuff because very different demographics/people would buy a 15k compact car for their own reasons. Also you guys don't seem to understand economics. sell 500k cars with $2000 profit($15,000 each) or sell 10k sports cars for $80,000 and get a profit of 10k per car. Which would earn more money?
