Why do certain sounds in games sound like they're in a sewer pipe?

When I play certain games particularly when there is clapping sounds and it gets louder it sounds like someone is turning on a short delay (reverb or something) that really sounds obnoxious!

Ya, its reverb, most likely from EAX or whatever positional sound API your sound card uses. You can try to adjust it in-game, or you can try and disable environmental/ambient sound effects through your sound card's software controls.

^Exactly - sometimes you may have an environmental effect toggled from within the sound card software configurator. And example would be my own here as you can see I have the "city" effect enabled.

If you simply turn off any effects from the drop down box it will disable any EAX type effects frm the sound card itself
