Why do cars in England sell for so much more?

Watching Top Gear and seeing the prices they announce for cars and converting it to dollars, they're generally 1.5-2 times more expensive for the same car we get in America.

Is it just because we manufacture cars here? Is it similar throughout Europe as well in non-car building countries, like anywhere besides Germany?

cars in japan sell for much much less. i remember 3 years ago i was browsing nissan's used cars listings... and saw preludes with pretty much no miles for about $3000 USD and 300ZX's for $8000 or so. oh well.
