Why do candidates say stupid things?

This isn't about just the Hillary faux pas. Every election cycle candidates don't seem to know to be careful with their words. Hillary is trounced for speaking a probable truth, yet Trump gets away with everything, and boy has he said some big ones (enforcing my belief that in his case we can't look away. America says, "Crazy is awesome!"). I remember the Romney apology too. Stein seems to have her wits about her.

But partisanship aside, weren't we all taught to be careful with our words? Shouldn't a presidential candidate be the most careful?

Hillary is a Mass Murderer, Trump is a super successful Businessman worth $billions with the Midas Touch.

What is this 'probably truth' that came out of Billary's manufactured mouth? Is this head nodder 'probably truth' or is actually something that was used in a correct context, isn't negated by something as (or more) true on the other side of the issue, and actually has true relevance? It's entertaining to watch the sheeple manipulations from Billary, so please, share.

Part of it is because they say alot and its all recorded now add in some questions are designed to require an unpopular response. This applies to all of them.
