Why do .bin files exist?

Okay, so they both serve the same purpose. ISO requires one file, the ISO. BIN requires two, the BIN and a CUE file for it. Why do people insist on using BIN instead of ISO?

ISO seems superior to me, and anytime I come across something I need in BIN format, I immediately convert it to ISO anyway.

Back in the olden days, ISOs could only contain one kinda of file system. Bin/Cue can conatin anything.
