Why do bars have such strong/aggressive names?

I don't like to drink but I go to a lot of bars around the city. Sometimes to meet friends, other times to glean information from people. What I've noticed are the strong names of these places. Here are a few.

1. The Bitter End

2. The Crime Scene

3. Death and Company

4. (Any wild animal) Head

Speak for yourself. Around here it's mostly names

Grotto's
Kildare's
Mojo's
Klondike Kate's
Deer Park Tavern
Rooney's

There's a was a gay bar called the Unicorn Club that got closed down a few years ago. That's kind of strong in a way especially with a picture of a unicorn's head above the bar. You know with the long tubular horn sticking out from its forehead.

Don't really have aggressive bar names here. We have more damn banks and liquor stores than bars though. I persoanly don't like bars. You will find me at Apple Bee's, Chili's or Hooters.

I don't recall seeing a bar with an "aggressive name" now that I think of it. Although a bar with a name like "Rape Machine" or "Murder Factory" would be kinda funny.

All our bars are "<streetname> Saloon" or the like. There's nothing terribly aggressive. Except the Rose and Thistle; those things have thorns, man. Ow.

Must be where you live. Where I lived, most of them were just "the" something:

The Morrissey
The Bottleneck
The Distillery
The Cobalt
The Bourbon
The Cambie
Johnnie Fox's Irish Snug <-- my favourite

None of these sound aggressive. My personal experience has been that if a bar has a wacky name,.. then there is a good chance it sucks.

Crown and Anchor
Posse East
Hole in the Wall
The Local
Hopfields
Hopdoddy
Tap 24
Cain and Abels
Blackbird and Henry
Drink Well
