Went to deposit a check in my bank, California National Bank (formerly Fidelity Federal). Lady had me sign my check, write my acct# on it, etc. Normal.

Takes the check and my deposit slip, stamps it with her stamper, and then says, "Oh, your account is closed."

WTF?!?!

"Your balance was zero, so the branch you opened it with closed it." Of course my balance was zero, I've been unemployed since June 02. But I've always had $$ in the bank until a few weeks ago.

To make a long story short, she hosed me, stamped my check so now I'll never be able to cash it anywhere else, and told me I was outta luck. Didn't even offer to reopen my account (not like I'd be interested after this...)

Sigh.

The people that run 99% of the banks really need a good course in customers service. Most have their heads so far up their asses it's not funny.

Go to the bank yahoo, I mean manager, and sit down and politely tell him your situation. I would hope that he/she would extend customer service for you. My bank branch merged into a very large bank. Long story short, my bank branch jacked around my wife and told her she was not a customer because the computer systems were not merged. She was just trying to buy a money order. I sent a letter to the chairman and he sent me a personal letter and had one of his flukies cater to me for any other problems.

Just be polite and they should help you. I mean she stamped your check. They will at least have to cut you another one.

I've worked in a bank for 5 years, now. 3 as a teller, and 2 as a net technition. Anyway, if the account was only closed for 2 weeks they should be able to do what is called a force reopen on the account. They have to keep your number in reserve for something like 3 months, just in case any activity goes through.

Secondly, you can cross the stamping out, and sign it again. Write, "Not used for purpose intended" below your signature, and you should be able to cash it.

I use Timberland Bank (for free no minimum balance checking) and Harborstone Credit union, and haven't had much of a problem with either. Look for a local bank, they usually treat customers better than the large chain ones. Credit Unions generally are a better option also if you have the means.
