I was wondering this morning why do Atheist and Agnostics celebrate Christmas?

I'm not Jewish so I don't celebrate Hanukkah ( Chanukah or Chanuka ).
I'm not African so I don't celebrate Kwanzaa. I don't even think of it as a real holiday.

So why Christmas? I see so much venom and hate for Christians and people that do believe in Christ on this board. Then at Christmas everyone is telling about the gifts they received and gave. What they are doing on Christmas etc...

Are they being Hypocrites? I think they are. If you are an Agnostic or Atheist and you celebrate Christmas let us all know why you shouldn't be considered a hypocrite.

Defined as:

Atheism, in a broad sense, is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist.

Agnosticism is the view that the truth value of certain claims—especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, but also other religious and metaphysical claims—is unknown or unknowable.[1] Agnosticism can be defined in various ways, and is sometimes used to indicate doubt or a skeptical approach to questions. In some senses, agnosticism is a stance about the similarities or differences between belief and knowledge, rather than about any specific claim or belief.

Already had this thread yesterday. It was locked yesterday. Give it a rest. Just enjoy the day.

It's no a religious holiday. It's a commercial holiday

Why do Christians celebrate Christmas? Jesus wasn't born on Dec 25, the act of caroling, putting up trees and wreaths, and general indulging in pleasures is all 100% completely pagan. Dec 25 is part of a Pagan holiday.

So, Christians, why do YOU celebrate Christmas.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen Dawkins without a suit. It's like he was born in one and it is a permanent part of him.
Maybe he IS Jesus.

Christmas is both the religious (the birth of Jesus) as well as a secular holiday (Santa, giving of gifts, family gathering).

The origins of Christmas are actually a pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice. The Christians didn't like that and moved Jesus' birthday to today to try to claim the holiday (most historians agree he would have been born around April).

So no, there's nothing hypocritical about an atheist celebrating Christmas. They're just focusing on the secular part of the day.

It's fun. We should probably view the mid-Winter celebrations as the Hindus view the million faces of god - multiple aspects of the same thing, a celebration to light the dark and drive away the cold.

PS: Persecution whine is really whiny even as whiny persecution whines go.

Indeed.

As for myself, I celebrate in part for several reasons. My mom is Catholic so I was raised celebrating Christmas for religious purposes. So part is tradition.

Second I think Christmas is more than just celebrating the birth of Christ. It is an idea. Get to together with loved ones and friends and share a moment of joy and happiness. That isn't an exclusively Christian ideal.

The origin of "Christmas" is pagan. A celebration in mid-winter,focusing on community and family.

Spin it all you want, the christian holiday was adapted to incorporate pre-existing pagan tradition.

Besides, me loves some presents.

You may now return to your self prescribed sanctimony.

I've always wondered this. Also curious as to why there is so much hate towards Christianity in general. Okay you don't believe in Christ. That's okay but why spout such venom and hate towards those that do?

There isn't. The Christians that draw fire here do so not because they're Christians but because they are douchebags. If they were atheist, Zoroastrian, or animist the same folks would still draw fire because they would still be douchebags.

But you know it goes both ways. Actually, it goes all ways as every religion (or non religion in the case of Atheism) spouts shit towards each other. As far as I'm concerned, if you believe in something, fine and dandy. Just keep your shit out of mine and I'll keep my shit out of yours.

This.

I don't care. I was just wondering why Atheist and Agnostics are so hypocritical about CHRISTmas. They should be celebrating Kwanzaa.

They can celebrate for any reason they want, not just because it is a supposed Christian holiday. It's (as has been said) a commercial holiday now anyway so people get time off and celebrate, period. Obviously, you do care since you called them hypocrites for doing so.

I'm not a religious person by any means and I still celebrate Christmas. Why? Because Christmas has taken on a different meaning for me. It not means I get to see family and friends that I normally don't get to see, and it brings back great memories from my childhood. At this point in my life I could care less about the religious meaning behind it.
