I can understand why Apple PowerMacs cost more than a comparable PC: they're more proprietary and they have a smaller user base, so Apple is free to charge whatever it wants without competitors.
However, what's up with Apple monitors? A 17" Apple Studio Display costs $699. A 19" Dell UltraSharp 1900FP, arguably one of the best flat-panel monitors on the market, costs $674. Essentially, a buyer is getting 2 extra inches of real estate for $25 less money.
Why does Apple price themselves out of contention? If I were looking for a computer, the price of PCs would immediately pull me away from Apple. Operating systems aside (I do like OSX), people replace PCs about every three years.
Keeping that in mind, the extra $1500 spent on a top-of-the-line Mac vs. a top-of-the-line PC is just wasted money. They can do the same things, and they both look asthetically great.
