Why do American football players have so much padding?

Between the strength and speed of the players, and the type of hits they deliver, they'd be seriously injured without it.

They would have to completely change the way they hit if they didn't have all that padding.

to protect against broken bones, dislocated shoulders.

there is so much in the shoulder padding because that's what you hit with.

-edit- if you've ever played back yard ball hard, somebody always dislocates a shoulder or gets hurt.

Yes, we generally hit with shoulders / head up, no padding and we'll injur ourselves quite easily. Rugby's hitting is different from football, you don't have someone coming from 20 yards off that can run 40 yards in 4.6 seconds and weighs 230 pounds planning on barreling into you straight on.

The owners insist on it to protect their multi (multi-multi-) million dollar investments.

If you decide to call them a "Wuss" in fornt of their face, please let me/us know, it's make good video ...... (don't forget to wear your pads though, you could get hurt when they demonstrate).

😀

FWIW

Rugby & American football are not the same game... not even close.

Edit: Play one series of downs and you'd understand the pads.

Ah..the good ol' "American football is for pussies. Look at all of that padding they wear. Real men don't wear pads."

Hhahahahha..hahahha...haha. The Rugby guys have no idea. They would seriously die with some of the hits that are dished out in American football. It is brutal. Guys hit for the sake of hitting, not just to tackle. Without pads, it would be far too dangerous.

It's pretty much unfair to compare US Football and Rugby. Two completely different types of tackling.

And yes, they would die with some of the hits dished out in American football. But the person delivering the hit would be dead, or probably paralyzed too.

I never said that. I'm approaching this soley from an aesthetic perspective. 😛 I don't play football of any kind.

You just reiterated what he said...

I read it as him taking a "shot" at Rugby players, as referring to the superior builds of US Football players.

yeah, but that's the thing, their builds only look superior due to the padding.

In terms of strength, speed, size, agility, and overall athletic ability, I would take US football players over Rugby players any day of the week.

Never been around football players have you?

They are freakin' HUGE. And I'm 6"3 220.

I actually told them.
Apparently they all think it's quite stylish. You know how those football players are, too many hits to the head and such.
To each his own.

If you watched the Pats/Denver game last night and saw what Watson did (even though it was moot), imagine a guy that is 6'5" 250ish lbs who runs a 4.4-4.5 40 coming from the OTHER side of the field and chasing down one of the faster players and just lay him out.

No pads = champ bailey roadkill

Over the years the pads have gotten bigger as the players have gotten bigger and stronger. I wonder what pads will look like in the year 2040.
