Why do 3D programs keep freezing???

So far I've only tried Warhammer: Dawn of War Beta and 3DMark03, and in both the programs will freeze at random times for a few seconds. Then they will go again, and later freeze, again for a few seconds. This keeps repeating. In Warhammer this is especially annoying as it makes the game unplayable. This didn't happen on my previous system which was an Athlon 850 with a geforce2 GTS. I'm using the newest chipset and graphics drivers (both from nvidia, not the respective manufacturers) and directX 9.0c. Also tried turning on anisotropic optimization, in the display settings, but it didn't make a difference. Any help appreciated!!!

Edit: Also tried putting the video card on its own power rail.

My specs are:

Athlon 3500+
BFG Geforce6800GT
1GB crucial pc3200
Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 mobo
480w antec PSU

Well, I did some good searching before posting this, but couldn't find anything that was really the same issue. Fixed it though, turned out I just had to disable fast writes in the bios.

By the way what does everyone recommend agp aperture size be set to?

the same amount as the amount of memory on your video card (256MB)
