Why do 30 LCD's leave me cold so far?

I've liiked CRT's for a monitor/gaming - vibrant colors. smooth images.

On paper 30" LCDs are great - size, IPS, size, high res, size, owners like them, but every time I look at one it leaves me not liking the look in some subtle way. Not sure if it's cool' colors, pixelization or what.

Good 24" seem to look better.

Anyone else have this reaction to them, and any info to address the problem?

(Side note. with my PC crash I'm using a 65" LCD w/PS3 for this post, and liking it a lot).

"cool" seems to be an odd assessment of 30" IPS. AFAIK, they're still wide gamut... the usual complaint is that they're too "hot".

For the asking prices, I don't think a home audition is out of order. Put it on your desktop, tune/calibrate it, see what you think. My initial impression of IPS (which was gained from an NEC 20wmgx2, a normal gamut display) was that it was lively as hell, while being brutally analytical.

Maybe it's the analytical aspect that gets to you? A good IPS hides no flaws. It can actually make some things look bad.

My only complaint about my 3007wfp-hc is that the anti-glare coating gives the monitor a bit of a grainy look if you are too close. But it's not a big deal as if you sit close enough to notice it, you are too close and need to move your head around to see everything,

30" are NOT pixely compared to 24", 30" has higher pixel density in fact. you are looking at old or misconfigured store screens. lcds not magic, an ips is an ips and isn't going to magically get better looking at 24".

Ditto. There are few desktop monitors that offer the same pixel density as a 30" 2560x1600 (I assume the OP is comparing 30" monitors and not 30" TV's). I'd never go back to a CRT from my WFP3007-HC, I enjoy the IPS picture quality much more.

Don't even bother with looking at monitors in stores. They're badly adjusted, in "torch mode", using an analog signal split 40 different ways at non-native resolution more often than not.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 30" you saw was running at 720p or similar.

^^ This. If the monitor isn't hooked directly to a single PC and configured perfectly, it's pointless to even try to assess it. I saw a Samsung 25.5" screen that looked terrible, along with most of the other screens around it, and discovered that it was playing off of a VGA switchbox at 1024x768 :p Later I saw one hooked up properly at 1920x1200, and it was superb for the price.

Thanks, the feedback is helpful as I try to sort out my reaction to them (most often I've seen tthe Apple 30").

It's a litttle like test driving an expensive car with rave reviews and just 'not liking the feel', when you want to like it, and before you select it as a major purchase.

I don't know where to see other 30" especially in something like WoW.

I'd guess it's because you generally are seeing TNs with dynamic contrast ratio, which tends to make colors look overly (& inaccurately) bright & brilliant.

It looks nice in a store like that, but for actual usage, it's horrible.
