at work i talk over instant messenger to people the next cube over. We do it cause its easily ignored while you are working. we don't call each other by our IM names though.

Or it is easier to write their conversation then to speak it. This is often the case when discussing programming or mathmatics.

i did this at work. my co-worker and i im'ed each other saying how much we hated the guy sitting between us. the guy was like "what's so funny?" and we were like "umm... nothing."

If one is typing to the other while the other one talks, there are a few possibilities:

1). One of them is mute
2). One of them bit their tongue and is, therefore, unable to speak.

or 3). They are just both idiots.

I've never done that unless I don't want other people to hear what I'm saying. I don't call friends by their IM names... some people do it as a joke though. Some people at my college called each other by their login names too, if they were easily pronouncable. Like any other nickname.
