I beleieve it's because Clusters Of Workstations (COWs) was first used to describe distributed computing projects.

Nah, you guys are way wrong. Its because its the way they measure work done. They Count Only Work-units.

The actualy reason can be found on their web-site. Apparently one of the Dnet crew is somehow linked to a cow. Definitely a question for moose.
