Why didn't they standardized USB/Firewire headers on motherboards?

That's one of my pet peeves. They're all different! Antec cases separated the headers (so you have 6 or 8 pins to connect) instead of a block header so it can be used with different motherboard headers. It's a pain to connect. Still, my Leadtek SIS 735 based board uses a weirdo connector that I can only connect 1 of the front USB ports to it (that's because it has 1 less power connector that I need).

Same with firewire. Arrghhh!

But isn't plugging in tons of single pin connectors fun? Maching up wires all while trying to read the motherboard specs from the manual?

I feel your pain!

ye it's fun it took me 45min to get it to work 🙁

I fashioned some rectangular brackets to hold the connecters together. I simply line them up properly in the bracket, tighten, and connect it to the board. It's kind of a mini vice held together with a small twist-tie. Two small pieces of plastic exactly as long as all the connecters lined up laterally on either side with the ends open. Take the twist-tie and tighten it around the assembly VERY tight. Because of the shape of the connecters, it stays square. You now have a solid connector to plug into the board.

Makes life MUCH easier.

I hate all cases now that come with front USB/firewire headers....they suck

I like the having the front connections, but hooking them up kinda sucks.

You know, if you don't like them, you don't have to hook them up...

Yep, hooking them up is a pain. I used to ignore them, but since I bought so many USB devices that I had to have more USB ports.

I could use the 2 in front, but I didnt hook them up correctly when I was building the computer, so I'm not going to bother anymore (too much work now)
