Why didn't MS buy Aureal and stick it to Creative?

Or does MS/Creative have a good thing going? Personally since they like to dominate all the markets, I'm surprised they didn't buy this superior technology and use it to crush Creative with their garbage they've been putting out the last couple years (And the current garbage is the same as the few year old garbage, just in a new bag)
