Why didn't anyone tell me that Handbrake had an Update v0.10

Because I don't think it's used by many Users.

But anyways, thanks for the knowledgable share! :)

I'm still running 0.9.8 because there was something in 0.9.9 that I didn't like.

Let us know how .10 works!

Are they letting you choose your own file size again or are you still stuck with presets and the constant quality slider? I read through the release notes and didn't see anything but thought I would ask.

I see they dropped support for XP.

The target file size has been gone since 0.9.6 and I wouldn't expect it back. You can set your own bitrates, don't need to depend on the presets or sliders.

Thanks for letting me know. I might try the new release and see if the bitrate option does what I need.

It's always had the bitrate option so you won't see any changes there.

I agree, though, I liked it better when I could choose a target size and choose variable bit rate. Now I have to get check with a bitrate calculator online before if I have to set something up. Granted it's not difficult but it is an extra 2-5 minutes of my life that I will never get back.

I've been playing around with the QuickSync hardware encoding in the nightlies for a few months now, and for those who haven't tried it yet I would recommend it only for a quick encode for a phone or tablet. It's still not the equal of x264 for archiving purposes.

Sure is fast, though.

crf mode (constant quality) is better than a 2 pass with a target bit rate (file size) if you don't care about the specific output size and in a lot of cases we actually don't (you may be able to ballpark it considering the properties of the source and what crf value you choose).

A target bit rate is the same as targeting a file size and I can only guess they want more people to use crf mode (which is a good thing) since you have to do the calculations yourself now to use 2 pass bitrate mode.

I'm on haswell here (which has some quality improvements over the previous one's) and I've tried QuickSync on OBS and it seemed to do a pretty good job. Seemed much better than NVENC (nvidia's hardware encoder) and considering the speed it seemed pretty well suited for streaming.

I tried to encode a video using CUDA once................ once.

handbrake is probably the de-facto tool to transcode files using h.264. Stop making such broad assumptions. You'll just embarrass yourself.

It probably wasn't reported sooner because the older versions are fantastic, and handbrake only updates once a year.

Although, with h.265 and VP8 in tow, I'll be testing this out over the next couple weeks. I'll have to see if Plex supports those formats.
