Why did you start smoking?

As a non smoker I've always wondered why someone would start smoking. I am not trying to start a flame war or anything of the sort, I just want some answers to why people start in the first place.

I wonder the same. Letsee, it has health risks, makes you stink, and wastes money. I don't get it 😕

I would say most started in their teen years or when they were going through really stressful times in their adult life.

A friend of mine, who I spent much of the summer traveling with, was a chain smoker. We'd also drive during obscene hours - 4 in the morning from NYC to Boston - for example. I'd sometimes feel exhausted and would use the coffee and cigarettes combo to keep me alert, figuring that it wasn't a big deal since i was getting all that second hand smoke anyways.

In other words, I'm dumb.

qft.. thats how it happened for me too, but luckily i quit a little over a year ago, and am smoke free again, thank freakin Bob. (I don't believe in god, but I believe in my friend Bob..)

i dont smoke, but i know my brother took it up when he started smoking weed. he'll take a hit, then light up (he rolls his own cigarettes) to give him a boost.

bs, its to seem cool.

not even sure why i started smoking, just kinda happened. Went from taking hits off friends ciggarettes , then to smoking just when drinking (i know everyone says it, but its true) and now to a full time smoker. Thinking about it, i should bill the kids who gave me those first hits for a couple thousand.

I don't smoke cigarettes, but I did a little in high school and college. It gave me a buzz, looked cool, and was something my peers did. I never got addicted, though, because I never smoked more than a couple a day. I never really had the urge to become a consistent smoker. I don't know whether this is a genetic thing, or if I just had self control and new not to make cigarettes a big enough deal to make it hard to quit. I occasionally will smoke a cigar, but never smoke more than 12 a year. Nowadays, I really can't take a sharp inhale of cigarette smoke, it kind of makes me queazy.

Same thing happened to me. I had realized that smoking was still rewarding without alcohol. Since then I've quit but I still smoke a few whenever I'm at a party.

I'm not a smoker now but honestly, I started smoking because I thought it was cool and because it was forbidden. I was underaged when I started smoking...it gave me a bad boy image I think and I kind of liked it.

I smoked regularly from age 15 or so until I was 21. I was a pack a day smoker and quit cold turkey at the request of a GF. We both quit together and when we broke up a few months later she went back to smoking and I did not. That was 18 years ago. I'm glad I gave it up when I did because it would be much more difficult to do so after 20+ years of developing that habit.

If you must experiment with smoking I would strongly advise you to quit early...the longer you wait, the harder it is to quit. I was lucky...

To look cool.

I remember specifically lighting up when I saw hot girls in the vicinity. I guess I thought being seen smoking improved my "chances".

Jesus H. Christ I could not have been more retarded. I'd go back and kick myself in the ass if it were possible.

I got started because my friend had a pack and I was curious as to what it felt like. The first ciggarete was like being high, the second slighlty less, and the third even less. Before I knew it I was smoking at least a few a day. Since then I've been at college and struggled with it early in the semester but now bum a ciggarette every once in a while and have not bought a pack in a while.

I'll have a cigarette every now and then and the reason is usually I'm looking for a buzz. I can't imagine smoking more than 1 every 3 weeks though because it gives practically no benefit to the smoker whatsoever... even to the point where if I smoke, say, 2 within 10 minutes of each other I run the risk of getting sick to my stomach. Other than that, I know some people who smoke because they hate when waiting for a bus, for example, just to stand around doing nothing. *shrugs*

I started after breaking up with my first gf. Only smoked a couple months and then stopped. Then in fall of 2005 started again just for the fvck of it I guess.
