Why did this happen? What can we do so that it doesn't happen again?

This thread is to address the issues behind the attack. What are we doing to these arab countries to make them want to attack us? What can we do to make them not hate us so much?

Assuming that it was an arab fraction that attacked us. Are we driving their country into poverty? Are we killing their civilians? What can we do to change our foreign policy so that in the futur people won't hate us so much?

Emotions are high to retaliate but we need to think about what we can do to solve the problems. Killing our attackers will only create new attackers if the problems are not solved. I think we should kill our attackers AND resolve the problems that exist so that we don't just create more problems for ourselves in the futur.

What can we do?

There is almost no way to stop it from happening again. It could come from inside or outside because of the type of attack.

As long as there exists certain elements of the world's society (notably Islamic fundamentalists) that consider capitalism, free expression of religion, and free speech to be wrong, the United States (the epitome of these) will have enemies. Since these societies use terrorism as their ideal means of expression, these attacks will never cease as long these societies remain in power (or even exist).

Why did this happen? Because we got caught with our pants down again. Just like before both World Wars we had become a soft complacent society that thought we could hide behind our oceans and not worry about an attack on U.S. soil. For the last 10 years the citizens of the United States have forgotten their history and have been more concerned with looking out for themselves instead of looking out for the greater national good. People have thought, wrongly, that since the Cold War is over that we don't have anything to worry about. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. Without the stabilizing influence of the Soviet Union these rouge states are free to do as they wish without anyone there to hold them back or reign them in, thus the world is a much more dangerous place. Also the FBI, CIA, and U.S. Military have had their budgets cut to the point where they can barely maintain their current forces and commitments much less go out and look for new dangers. We need to realize that there is a large part of the world that is jealous of us and hates us for various reasons and they consider the U.S. to be "The Great Satan" and they are at war with us. This is what we can expect more of in the future if we continue to be perceived as weak and do not respond forcefully when something like this happens. There should be no negotiations or quarter for terrorist. Find who they are, where they are operating from, and cause that place and them to no longer exist. These people only understand violence and force and it's time we responded in kind. Time and time again we have had to learn the hard way that the only way to maintain peace is through strength. It is time we become strong again and protect our shores and citizens in the way they deserve. Much like the Japanese after Pearl Harbor these terrorists will soon learn that they have awakened a sleeping giant.

SKiller....that's exactly right!! We need to show these scum that though they can bloody our nose, they will not knock us down. We will come back stronger and more unified than ever and hunt them down like the subhuman debris they are.
