Because autumn in New England is beautiful.
And, New Hampshire is rural enough that the candidates can get away to the countryside within minutes.
Lastly, its close enough to New York and Boston that they can meet their big donors without having to look like they keep going to New York and Boston. That would make them look too east coast elite.

...And interestingly...New Hampshire went to Obama even though it's the home of the Libertarian "Free State Project" and thus chock full of serious free marketers. Perhaps not enough capitalists have relocated to New Hampshire yet.

New Hampshire is one of the first swing states to report their votes and winning there motivates their supporters in states still voting.

Theoretically.

Also important to note that even its measly 4 electoral votes gave Obama another critical path to winning the election. He could have lost Ohio, Florida, AND Virginia and still (barely) won the election since he picked up Iowa, Colorado, Wisconsin, Nevada, etc. along with New Hampshire.
