why did the parking cop chalk my tire twice?

once where the tire touches the ground (following through to the ground itself). that one i understand, to see if the car has moved.

but the second mark is 180 degrees, directly opposite the first mark, on the SAME tire.
what's the reasoning for that one?

http://www.answers.com/vandalism

The intentional and malicious destruction of or damage to the property of another.

No destruction or damage, therefore not vandalism.

You are to take this as an invitation to put 50 more chalk marks around the perimeter.

maybe they are making sure that the marks are distinguishable from marks from another enforcement issue (e.g., overnight parking, 48 hour parking limit, etc...)

it destroyed the perfectly black sidewall of the tire... :p

i was curious why a cop was marking your tire also. did you do something wrong? youd think if they didnt want you moving it they would tow or boot it.

I've never heard of this happening. Why do they mark it even once??

I've gotten my fair share of speeding tickets, and have never seen a cop do this.

They mark your tire so they know how long your car has been there (i.e. since the last time they went around marking tires on that street). If you've been there longer than allowed, they ticket you.

The second mark might be an indication of how long the car has been there (so if the cop goes around every 30 minutes then 1 mark = 30 minutes, 2 marks = 60 minutes, etc)

If it's parked in one spot for a long time they'll do it.

It's for parking. The meter maid will make a pass marking tires, then come back later to see if they've moved. If the car hasn't moved, and the time's expired, they steal your money.

No, this is completely illegal, and I urge you to take anyone who says differently to task.

I've always thought marking tires was pretty stupid. There's a not-insignificant chance that you could drive away for a bit, come back, and have your tires be in the exact same position. Or you could have parked somewhere else that marked your tires in a different position, then return to the original location and have them match up.

ah, i see. never seen that here in az. of course i make sure the meter is fed if i have to park at one. 99.99_% of my life is spent parking in private lots (business) or on streets without meters. i would be pissed if i had a serious car, just had it detailed and came out to find 2 chalk marks on freshly treated tires.

Hmm .... I am glad that I can park in most parking lots for as long as I would like. And that I can park my car at my house without having to worry about meter maids or anything. That must suck!

think if i just drop the parking brake and let the car roll back a few inches, he'll still ding me with a ticket.
as long as i keep feeding the meter right?

So, 50 marks = 1500 minutes. I'm thinking that's not such a good idea.

Yeah and you can wipe off spray paint with a cloth and some paint thinner. It's still vandalism.
