Why did Rolen just slide into first?

did he think that he would move faster by sliding? did he think he would have a better chance of making lowe miss the tag?

wtf is up with ball players and sliding into first?

as soon as you slide you lose any chance of making any kind of real move.

it is much better to stay on your feet, even rolen should be able to outrun a pitcher.

it's just stupid to slide when you don't have to.

obviously, he's trying to make lowe stretch to tag him...or he's trying to catch him by surprise. anything to avoid being the third out with the runner at third base.

You don't need to be tagged to be out at first. The first baseman just has to catch the ball with a foot on the base.

if he doesn't slide, lowe has an easy out...and if rolen tries to avoid him while running, he'll most likely be called out for running outside the lines.

from the angle they showed the original play, the pitcher was in front of him, but on the rise from picking up the ball, so going under seemed like the logical choice.

but then again i dont know much about baseball, but i was just baffled to see why you had to post a thread about a play.

because by sliding you lengthen the area you can reach to. thus you slide because it gets you there that split second quicker.
