Why did my I.P. address change from "24.xx.xx.xx" to "66.xx.xx.xx"

Wtf? I have cable and my I.P. has always been the typical 24.xx.xx.xx but today I was having trouble connecting to Q3 games so I was checking things out, went to release/renew my I.P. address and noticed the 66 prefix when did cable start getting I.P. numbers other than 24?

Your cable modem is set up for DHCP, which means that the server can assign any IP which it has the rights to. I am one of those unfortunately souls who was with Excite@Home and is now with AT&T Broadband, and my IP went from 24.4.229.174 to a constantly changing one. One reason for this is most cable operators don't want you to run a server on your home connection, so they change the IP constantly. They want you pay extra money for the static IP.

Since Exite@Home is a bankrupt and is going to terminate contracts with its cable partners. Companies like Cox, AT&T and Comcast have to switch everybody from Excite's service to their own. Even though they own the fiber, Excite owned the servers. They also have to pay 355 million for Excite?s service till February. After that, Excite@home will be stop functioning and all services will be done by companies alone.

judge postpones Excite@Home decision

AT&T Broadband customers bogged down

Ahhh, it must be Cox/RoadRunner doing what marat said.

Cox is pretty good about the I.P. address, mine never changes unless I change the mac address of the nic, my I.P. is leased and renewed every day or two but I always get the same one :D
