i just installed directX 9 and the new catalyst 3.0 drivers yesterday. my 3dmark score dropped from 15,000 to just over 10,000. why should these new drivers drop my video performance by 33%???

It didnt drop for me at all most likely you have conflicting drivers, make sure you remove EVERYTHING that had to do with your old drivers that includes from the registry also. I have Dx9 and the 2.5 drivers and I got a few points more with my score. If your not familiar with Reg Cleaner its a great tool to clean out the registry.

i'll give that a try...but is it too late to use it now that i've upgraded to dx9? do i need to revert back to my last restore point and then use it before installing the catalyst 3.0 drivers and dx9?

Well, seeing as that a new version of 3dmark is coming out (DX9 compat), who cares about this DX8 benchmark anyway :)

I saw this thread title, and I though "WHY DO YOU CARE?!?!?!?"
Have your actual game frame rates dropped? If not, then why the hell does your score in some crappy benchmark really matter? Surely it's how the actual games play that really is of any consequence, not "look at me, I got 15k 3d marks and it's dropped".

Usually a drop in score results in a drop in fps, isnt that what the score is all about? They kinda go hand in hand, I dont know too many people getting a high score with like 2 fps.

yeah, i really don't care what the benchmark is if it doesn't have any effect on performance...but i'm not that experienced with video tweaking and just assumed it was a bad sign that my benchmark dropped so drastically after installing the new drivers.

To me it is a bad sign if your score drops 5000 points that says something isnt right. Now if it dropped 500 points thats a different story. I look at my system this way if I spend the money to have top of the line GPU's and other hardware then I better have the best performance it can have. If all of a sudden I had a drop in scores then I go back and make sure everything is right so I just dont say that the drivers or DX9 made my system slower etc etc. But hey its your comp and from what your scores say you have a problem,if your happy with your fps in games cool but I would check your system to make sure good luck.
