why did it take 4 days to migrate AT from FT to VB?

couple of WFE's and a DB migration. shouldn't take more than a couple of hours IMO. 1 day at the most.

They have been migrating for what? Like 6 months or something stupidly long. 4 days downtime to ensure everything works is not the end of the world. Plus they did it over a holiday weekend, so it was probably like 1 day of work and 3 days partying.

I've heard a number of people say this. I've done some basic domain transfers, database conversions, but nothing complicated at all, much less on AT's level. It would be interesting to hear what happened.

Ya, sounds like something that would make a good front page article.

If they didn't bother to back up all the threads and people's stats I'm sure it would've taken only like 15 minutes.

Because you touch yourself at night.

Jesus appeared before the mods and said, "Yea, this seriously needs to be reigned in. Think you can work with me on this?"

how long do you think it would take to import 16 zillion Terabytes of records/data from fuesetalk to vBulletin?

It might take a few days.

*note.. 16 zillion terabytes is a guess... i dont have any knowledge of how big the actual database is that powers anandtech forums.

I imagine that they ran into a lot of difficulties porting in quotes from Fusetalk posts. I don't think that VB supports retarded nesting, so they probably had to hack together some stuff to parse the old FT code and assemble it into something that VB could read.

Wow, now that took awhile. Glad to see everyone back. It's gonna take a bit to get used to this new look though.

Actually yea, I'd love to read about the migration process. AT Forums one of the larger forums in the world and I'm sure has a relatively decent sized forum database. I'm sure it'd be an interesting read.

It was enough to cause space-time to loop back on itself. Even Google can't match that. The AT servers consume power well into the jiggawatt range.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure ATOT alone is large enough to require more than a day to migrate :p

vB supports nested quoting, it just removes them by default.
