Why did instaling Firefox 1.02 disable my old extensions?

I uninstalled Firefox 1.01, then went to install FireFox 1.02 and when installation was complete I got a pop up saying "Any old extensions have been disabled".

Sure enough they are, but when I go to "Options -> Extensions" they are still all there, but they don't seem to work. ie. FireFTP isn't showing up for me, etc.

So what's happening here exactly?

Some extensions are not compatible with the new release and you will need to update them

I have chosen to never do an uninstall of the previous version of Firefox before a new installation. Is this bad ?

They really need to work on their install/maintenance routines - the add/remove programs list is a mess. It lists all previous installed versions but if you choose to uninstall one of the previous versions, it takes out the most recent install anyway. What's the point in segregating the listings by version # in the first place then ?

On another note, is it normal for Firefox to instal multiple copies for each update? I have three Firefoxes, 1.0, 1.01 and 1.02 listed seperately under Add/Remove, each at around 1.5 megs.

that's what I was referring to... you probably didn't do an uninstall before installing a new one. And if you try to uninstall the old ones now, it'll simply remove the current directory (current install).
