I never understood people who say; "Hey! I could be doing that!!"

No, you could not be doing that,.. because you never did it to begin with. You see something that looks simple to you, that is making someone happy and lots of money and you are enticed by the $$$ & enjoyment to automatically assume you can pull off the same shit.

If that was the case, you would have been doing it.

Or, when you do see something like this, you head off and do just as well or better. But, that isn't happening.

People need to focus on what makes them happy - not what they think can make them happy. Sure, try some shit out, give it a shot, etc. But focus on the act itself, not the end result. Fawning over the results and not on the journey to get there is most people's downfall.

probably doesn't require a college degree either.

That's quite possible.

I started working for Publix Supermarkets in Florida when I was 17. 2-3 years later, one of our managers told me if I would move to TN where they were building new stores, I'd likely be a store manager in a couple years pulling six figures.

However...I didn't want to work 50hr weeks in a grocery store for the rest of my life.

Of course we should! Why should we take in account the hundreds of thousands that work dead end jobs as a career and live on the borders of poverty when a handful of people have made it big!

This is America! Land of the rich and the not yet rich!

That brings up an interesting point though, at least in the cases of Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. In both cases, they did in fact enroll in college. In both cases the connections they made while in college are arguably what got them to where they are today. If they had never gone to college, would anyone know who either of these two guys are today? Perhaps it isn't whether you go to college or not, but what you do with your time there that is the difference between winners and losers.

So much this.

Sooooo many people see a chart like this:

And think a college education is some kind of magic wand. It's not, it's a very expensive opportunity to learn, grow, and improve, and the payoff can be impressive if you take it seriously and work your ass off.

my wife's highest education level is a highschool diploma (she went to like a year of community college but that's it) and is making almost double that.

^This.

If you don't know why you went to college, then you failed college, independent of whether you got a degree or not. If your degree is just a checkmark on an HR form, and a bunch of information you "never" use - you failed college.

The point was to engage in a process for improving your ability to think, learn, and network. The domain specific learning was to enhance your knowledge base in a particular area, while the general education material was meant to broaden your understanding of wider subjects, and expose you to modes and methods outside your narrow focus. You were engaged in this process with numerous other students with the goal of learning to work together, deal with people with differing ideas, mores, and beliefs, and find ways of approaching problems in a group environment.

However, a large portion of college students today see it as just another hoop, some silly obstacle course those stupid old people make them go through so they can get a job. Starting with that attitude is a nearly guaranteed way to completely waste the opportunity of college education. Finishing with that attitude is evidence that the time and money spent was a loss.

I was pulling down almost $70k without my degree. Degree completion pushed me to over $90k.

Also, being comfortable in your own skin and being able to actually relate to people and interview well are far more important in many cases than a degree. Far too many people I have interviewed for jobs working for me in the last five years almost completely lack this aspect.

I ask myself this same question every day.

Most Americans are now days.

# of reasons:
- Cost
- what you actually learn
- how that relates to your job
- time it takes

Let's face it, it's WHOLE bunch of BS you need to do to get a "Degree" to land you a job.

What you actually learn matters very little (most people don't even end up doing what they went to school for).

And the cost....jesus christ, most 2nd world countries have free education that will put American colleges to shame.......

For starters, the Kardashians didn't get rich by someone not working. Rob Kardashian had to work his ass off to become a lawyer, and if you think Bruce Jenner didn't work to beat the Russians, you're full of crap. The current wealth generated by the famous Kardashians also takes a lot of work. Do you actually believe everything released by them is not completely planned out? That empire is going strong due to a lot of hard work.

Besides everything you said being false, it is incredibly false.
