Why did Drive-In Movies become extinct over the years (for the most part)

Just wondering what caused them to lose popularity. Last drive-in I went to was E.T. back in '82 with my parents when I was a kid. I know there's a few left here and there throughout the country, but for the most part they've fallen by the wayside. What gives?

yeah but i heard you do other stuff at drive in's.... never been to one tho so i wouldn't know

theres still one on the edge of the city here. i think part of the screen fell apart, if that tells you its status of operation..

I imagine the taxes of the large property have something to do with it. As taxes increased, either it wasn't profitable for them to operate as a drive-in, or was more profitable to rent it to someone else.

I went to one this summer, saw xXx and Goldmember. It was kinda a neat experience, I didn't realize they still had drive-ins until my friend took me to one.

~ Maybe because people got tired of watching movies in the cold/heat, and wanted to be comfortable?

~ Got tired of broken speakers that hung from your car window that produced poor sound?

~ Got tired of seeing the X-rated movie in the car next to them?

~ Didn't enjoy people walking in front of them blocking the screen going to the snack bar?

~ Having to endear people leaving near the end while racing their car engines to escape long lines?

~ Having to watch a movie during thunderstorms/rain?

😉

There's a drive-in about 25 minutes from where I live. They show mostly romantic and horror movies, which is what drive-in's are for. 😉

i miss going to the drive in. one they tore one down and built houses and another is a 7 day a week swap meet.

somehow i find mono sound from a 25cent speaker unappealing🙂

its no longer the 60s, finding places to makeout isn't that hard anymore hehe.

I think urban sprawl is another factor-- most of these things were in the boonies at one time. The reasons you give above I would gladly endure if only to keep from hearing all the annoying conversations, talking to the screen, and talking on the cell phone by inconsiderate moviegoers

I'd say sound is the biggest reason. Didn't George Lucas say that sound was 50% of the movie?

There's one not too far from where I live, but I've never been to it.

At the drive in around here, they have FM stereo sound. If you have a killer car stereo, you got killer sound.

But its surely not 100% comfortable and it sucks if its not a decent temp outside. At least you can smuggle an infinate amount of snacks in, along with people.

Same here.
You also get 3 movies in one (if you can stand 6 hours), for the price of a theatre movie pass.

theres also your windshield🙂

The last time I've been to a drive-in theater was probably back in '85. I don't recall staying in the car for very long, though. I guess between getting cold beer out of the trunk and using the rest room quite a bit, the time flew by.

A bit off topic: If you ever get a chance, listen to "Cheech and Chong's Drive-In or Pedro and the man at the Drive-In." This bit is a great parody about sneaking someone into a drive-in theater in the trunk of a car. It's pretty hilarious.
