Why did changing an O2 sensor make my transmission shift better?

'95 Corolla with the craptastic 3-speed. I swear it shifts better now. Could be placebo I suppose. Otherwise all I can figure out is it was previously running rich, thus still putting out a bit of power when the transmission thought it was idle, leading to rough shifts. It used to be especially bad letting off the gas quickly from hard acceleration. Now it's smooth as butter.

I thought I had a faulty tranny in a 94 Corsica so I took it to transmission shop and they gave it a tune up and didn't even touch the transmission.
He said w comp controls and the system being so integrated they end up doing a lot of tuneups over transmission work
