Why did Bush pick C. Rice as the next Sec of State?

Powell bailed. He did an excellent job, IMO, considering that these are some of the most difficult times in recent US History.

It was "a big secret" that Powell bailed. IMO, a secret only to the public. Powell is a retired General Officer (O-10). He knows better than to spring some BS on the Powers That Be.

Bush knew for a long time that he would bail. Bush had Ric pre-picked. Why? Vote above.

I don't know why this was controversial... I can remember back in 2000 Powell talking about only wanting to serve one term.

Powell did NOT do an excellent job. his policies were inconsistent and inadequate. Also he got taken for a fool a lot, both by Bush and by the French.

edit: oh yeah I voted for: She expressed interest in the position when she found out the Powell was bailing and Bush said "Yeah, OK,"

Yesh, she is. Physically attractive and more intelligent and well-spoken than the last 4 women I've dated combined.

I still want to hear what The Masses have to say.

I of course, am an unbiased, unopinionated, free-thinking, bipartisan voter. ;)

i think a lot of people expected Powell and many cabinet members to bail. look at other 2 term presidents, it is quite common

Well Powell was probably the most moderate member of the Bush camp. Unfortunately, due to Bush's, Cheney's and Rowe's policies, Powell had no choice but to look like an idiot and go before the UN with information that he knew was faulty. He tried to change it but was unable to sucessfully do so.

One of the reasons why Bush chose her is because she backs the Iraq war and is a bit more to the right than Powell is...therefore, it'll be much easier to get Bush's policies to move along.

yes, thats why i don't think he did such an excellent job. he did so-so. If it was excellent he would have won the battles against Cheney and Wolfowitz

It's more like the entire cabinet and adminstration. But I have to agree though...I think he could have done a much better job if the adminstration was not as absurd. Given the circumstances, however, I think he did better than what most people would have done. He was able to keep his respect and popularity for the most part.

I like Mr. Powell; but don't feel badly for him. He's a well-off man. His speaking engagments fetch him $5K+ EACH. Taxable of course, but damn....
