President Bush ordered us into Somalia for humanitarian reasons... stop the fighting, feed the hungry, etc....

For a while everything went pretty well, U.S. troops served as an "honest broker" for all sides, peace and stability were (in Somali terms) increasing, and the populace was happy we were there. Then, to make a long story short, we decided to choose up sides in the power struggles between the warlords, and we became fair game to everyone, and ended up leaving hurriedly on orders from President Clinton after a firefight with forces of one of the warlords in Mogadishu.

I think typical peacekeeping, help the somalis, give them food, all that crap. Basically crappy foreign policy where we try to spread our "influence", but screws us in the long run and makes everyone hate us.

If the Somalia people hate Americans so much (From wha I understand and saw in the movie Black Hawk Down; I only saw part of it). Why didn't American kill all of them (I know this sounds foolish, but if they hated American so much, why did American want to help?).

the impression i got from reading the book was that the soldiers were not aware of that level of hostility.

Oh ya, now that also reminded me something else. The soldiers didn't even bother to bring things like night vision goggles and other stuff... Because they thought the mission would only last for like 30mins or something like that.

But still though, if all of the Somaliaians are against American, why even bother to help them (Again, I saw in the movie and T.V. that every Somaliaian were harrassing American dead soldiers)

yup... what i found particularly humorous was how they were all pissed off that they had armor-piercing bullets. since the somalis didn't have armor, the bullets had no stopping power as they just went straight through them.

Apocalypse Now was based off the book Hearts of Darkness, not Black Hawk Down.

I'm not sure what Apocalypse Now or Hearts of Darkness has to do with this thread, though.

Surprisingly enough, the movie Black Hawk Down was based off the book...Black Hawk Down. :)

Actually, they were aware of increased hostility and had asked for reinforcements in the form of 'armour.' That is a Armoured Calvary Unit. The Marine Commanders formally asked several times and were turned down by their superiors and the Clinton Administration because this would have been reported as an increase or escalation of our military presence in the area.

Alot of people were talking about how much they feel like to drop nukes in Afganistan (bunch of fools), but I think if the Somalia is really the place to drop. For one, Afganistan people were under the Taliban control, who are the guys that Americans are after, not the Afgan people, but in the case of Somalia, every Somaliaian seemed to be after Americans. So why not kill them all? Geez... (I know, I start to sound stupid again, but if you see why they have done to American soldiers, you would be quite upset too)

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/ambush/

"Ambush in Mogadishu" tells the story of the most violent U.S. combat firefight since Vietnam. On October 3, 1993 elite units of the U.S. Army's Rangers and Delta Force were ambushed by Somali men, women and children armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. The Rangers were pinned down in the most dangerous part of Mogadishu, Somalia and taking casualties. What had started out as an operation to capture warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid--turned into a tragic firefight that lasted seventeen hours, left eighteen Americans dead, eighty four wounded and continues to haunt the U.S. military and American foreign policy.

What does a soldier going into the jungles of Vienam to take out a guy who's gone crazy have ANYTHING to do with what went on in Somalia?

Because we should've never been in Somalia in the first place, IMO.

Personally, I think people who talk about dropinng nukes on other country are quite foolish, but as I mentioned above dropping nuke on Somalia that I think I just made a fool out of myself. But Like I say, the condition in Somalia was justt horrible.

You could drop a nuke on almost anyplace on the Horn of Africa, and be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the "before" and "after" photos. The place is a sh!thole already, all a nuke would do would be to reduce the population somewhat.
