Why can't you play Duck Hunt on a projector?

I honestly can't come up with any physics explanation - the only difference between a CRT and a projector/screen combo is that the light is bouncing off the screen, instead of being emitted directly from the "target" - but it looks the same, as far as any light-sensing device should be concerned.

It's not the simple.

It doesn't work with HDTVs either, even CRT HDTVs.

Are you sure? I swear I played duckhunt on our early 80's Sony Projection TV.

And why the hell not?

Hell, when I bought Time Crisis 3 for the PS2, it's documentation said it wouldn't work on projection devices, either. What is it about light guns that I'm not "getting"?

I know for a fact it worked on a rear projection TV.

IIRC, light guns rely on interlacing to work, and most projectors and hdtv's are progressive scan.

Edit: oops, posted on my wive's acct. :p

IIRC the way the gun works is the gun is a mini camera. when you pull the trigger the screen goes black with a white square where the bird is. if the gun picks up a white square then it sees the shot as a hit, otherwise it is a miss.

i think it should work, maybe your projector isn't bright enough, or the screen is too big/ you are too close.

The gun is dependent on the scanning rate of the CRT IIRC. Projectors don't scan at the same rate a CRT does.

Edit: Too slow...

So if I were to try switching interlacing back on........

Yeah, this was a front projection.

Time Crisis 3/4 kinda works on the front projection Mitsu TV at my gf's place but that TV is on its last legs so it doesn't work very well.

Your wall isn't as reflective in the infared part of the spectrum as a glass TV.

That's because old projection TVs used CRTs to project, and if this was before HDTV, the scan rate would match a regular CRT TV.

The NES light gun is a visible light reciever, not an IR transmitter.

I was playing Duck Hunt on a 55" rear projection TV last weekend. Not an HD though.

It knows where you are pointing it based on when during each frame the electron gun lights up the phosphors it's pointing at.

The television casts a bright white light. There is a photosensor at the back of the light gun. If the light is cast down the barrel then the photo sensor reacts by reporting a hit.

It's really not the same as a camera, and the TV is doing all the work of trying to get the gun to react.

The dog still will laugh hysterically at you and you cannot shoot him! :p :p :p

If you had a higher reflective screen (LOTS of gain but UGLY for movies) it may work. Some biz PJ's that have a graphics mode make the whites really bright as into gamut clipping 200% and MAY work.

Did I tell you that sucky hound dog is going to laugh at you? :D

At least he cannot hump your leg! :disgust: -M

Actually I think Duck Hunt does make the duck white, and if the gun is pointing at the white area, it registers as a hit.

Well how the hell would you miss with a big-ass projection TV? :p

Some light guns time the painting of the screen for one frame, one pixel at a time using the h-blank to paint the screen and note the first time the gun picks up on the change to get the x,y cordinate of aim.

On a persistant full frame digital display device the concept of h-blank and v-blank are a little different from a device which uses scan lines.
