Why can't you mix alkaline and carbon zinc batteries?

It says so on all the battery boxes, but why is it a bad thing? And when was the last time anyone saw a carbon zinc battery?

Well, for one the capacity of the different types of batteries varies, and also the internal resistance of different types varies. But that said, when I've needed batteries in things I'd just find what's available and use it. Never seemed to cause a problem for me.
