Why can't you fast forward some movies in windows media player?

On some movies when I drag the slider bar to FF it it just goes back to it's current place when I try. It's only on some movies. Why is that?

I think its because the header information that provides the Media player with the length and such is missing. Usually a file that's truncated or corrupt will do this.

I've had that problem a few times before, never really understood why... just knew it was really annoying

they want you to follow the plot in the pr0n movie, not just FF to the good parts.

It is an .asf but it's saved on my hard drive. Why is that it won't fast forward? I'm sure i'm not missing any parts and it's not the first time it's happened.

That is my experience too. Who uses .asf anyways??

Same here and I've had it happen with all different file formats. Mostly WMV though. No idea why. ANd it sucks when you have to stop watching something and then have to start over next time you want to continue on.

I think you can fast foward with WMP6 (Start -> Run -> mplayer2) but there's an odd delay whenever you do it

Sometimes .asf files do that. Just get a program like bink & smacker and convert it to an .avi. No problems then.

I know you can index an ASF file using some free software, since I did it a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I can't remember what I used. However, if you search Google for "asf seek" it turns up some results that look usable.

the problem is either missing keyframes or a missing keyframe index, most video files these days have different type of frames mostly keyframes and delta frames, the keyframes are full images and delta frames say what has changed since the last image, now when you FF the player can only resume playback from a keyframe, if there are no keyframes, or if it cannot find those keyframes the player will decide what to do (in your case it decides to go back where it was)
