Whats the problem with a ccc style jobs program?? Lets take that $300 billion and put a million people to work over the next 10 years.

That way we at least have something lasting to show for the stimulus money when it runs out
 
The last round of stimulus was mostly tax cuts and payments to the states (exactly what one side of government really, really argues is a good thing which makes it laughable that they are so against that stimulus package). But, it is quite hard to create something definite with a tax cut. People's wallets are definately more full, but that isn't some concrete item that we can point to (like the Hoover dam). I just don't see any political agreement in this political climate for stimulus that doesn't focus mostly on tax cuts and more money to the states.

My particular jobs program: after you are on unemployment for 13 weeks (3 months), you are offered a CCC job. Take it or receive no payments at all. It doesn't cost any more than what we are already paying. It would employ just about anyone who is willing to work.

You want people to actually work for their free (it's free after a reasonable amount of time, since their previous employer did pay the UE fee) money?!?!? Are you F'ing crazy?!!?!?
 
I would much rather have a CCC then continuous unemployment payments. There are a multitude of jobs that need be done. Why not use that unemployment money to hire those that actually want to work?

While I think these stimulus bills are a waste of time and money. If we actually spent 300 billion on infrastructure. And I mean things like bridges, roads, ports, ect. At the end of the day at least we would have 300 billion in assets that are tangible infrastructure works that the country could utilize.

No, not at all. I just think that if we, the taxpayers, are going to spend money we ought get a return on it. A CCC type program just might do that.

I bet you think FDR's programs got the USA out of the depression.....you would be wrong.

A CCC style program will not be implemented because there are a host of private contractors willing to meet every whim of the federal government and make good money doing it. These folks keep the politicians in campaign funds and the politicians keep these folks on the clock. Cutting out the middlemen is akin to communism in the minds or at least in the rhetoric of folks who like the system the way it is.

I agree that this would be a horribly expensive undertaking, especially with workers comp laws, overtime laws, etc...but the Republican party has consistently shown that they only care for the wealthy, not the kinds of peons who would benefit from such a program.

That's not true and you kknow it. There are many Republicans that hire peons to do their work. Yes, it is usually yard work, or house work, but it is work.
 
Right...can you imagine the training that would be needed to report to the persons local hospital, police station, VA, old folks home, and wash windows, floors, read/visit with the sick/lonely???? My god, think of the training that would need to be done for that!!!! And, where would we get the relatively few extra people we'd need to help administer it?!?! It's not like we've got 9% unemployment or anything, yeesh!

The reality is this:

1.) There is zero will by the people who collect this "free" money to go and work for it, once they're past a reasonable amount of weeks (such as 36 weeks aka 9 months).

2.) There is zero will by the politicians to rock the boat of these masses especially since all the money they're paying them is "free".

Due to #1 and #2, there will never be a CCC type program setup again. The populace has no shame (or at least one that is greater than the work ethic they allegedly have) and the politicians aren't accountable.

I don't have a link right now,but Democrats ARE suggesting this. We'll have to see if it's in Obama's plan, but it might be.
 
They're suggesting people on UE past 36 weeks go into a CCC type program that pays less than, or at the very maximum, minimum wage hours? I'll believe it when I see it...
 
The CCC folks slept in tents, used latrines, ate in field messes, and were paid low wages: But the benefit was, they had a place to sleep, ate, and actually earned money.

OK, you've convinced me this time Craig, I can buy into that. :thumbsup:
