Put together a new system:
New stuff:
ECS KN1 SLi Lite
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200
2x512mb PNY Optima pc3200 dual channel
Powercolor x800gto 256mb
Raidmax RX-630A power supply
Old stuff:
WD 80gb
WD 120gb
Floppy
DVD-RW drive
CD-RW drive
So here's the breakdown:
Put stuff together, originally had an Antec Truepower(version I, 4 years ago) 430 watt power supply. Was running my original 1x512mb pc2700 in the system. Was having random freezes/crashes/bsod's. Got suggestion to replace ram with proper pc3200 ram. So I got 1x512mb PNY Optima pc3200, and everythin was workin great, so I got a second stick. Noticed that the ram chips aren't the same (CPU-Z sees the first stick as Infineon memory chips and had all the manufacturer stuff, production date, etc etc. Second stick CPU-z just shows a serial number, and nothing else, no manufactuer date, etc etc). However, the timings and everything are the same for both sticks of ram.
So anyway...things are running great, then noticed my pc was having trouble powering on (took a few tries before it would go on). Was running an old 4 year old Antec Truepower (version I) 430 watt. Got a suggestion to replace power supply, so I replaced it with a Raidmax Volcano RX-630A modular supply. Things are workin great. Powers up nicely, things running smoothly.
It's been about a week since then, and just a few days ago I started running bittorrent. Now I'm gettin BSOD's. Been 3 BSOD's in two days. Two just within 5 minutes just now. The last time it happened I had started up bittorrent immediately after a restart, and started up 5 downloads, and booted up a game at the same time. Within a few minutes, I got a bsod.
OK THAT WAS A LONG BREAKDOWN...
but now here's my question... First thought that comes to me is, can over stressing a single hard drive mess the computer up? I have 3 partitions on one drive, one for windows, one for program files, and one for everything else. My bittorrent downloads and my game are downloading to and starting up from the same partition.
If not, anybody know any other causes? Everytime I get a BSOD, I press the restart button, and during bootup, it stalls at the "Looking for IDE devices" part right after the ram check, causing me to completely power off the system then power on again, then all is fine.
For reference, here are some pictures I took of each BSOD as they happened.
First time
Second
Third
BTW I'm guessing it must be cuz I'm overstressing the drive since it's been a good amount of time since I restarted and all I've done is open up the browser and write this message up, and so far so good.
