Why can't they make a PC that instantly boots?

Even the fastest PC's take several seconds to boot. Why can't they make a PC where you flip the switch and you're at the desktop??

Solid state storage is pretty quick, but expensive. We're supposed to see a laptop with only solid state storage soon though.

Need to load a lot of stuff into the ram on bootup, and that takes time. Can't keep it in the ram permanently because ram is volatile, so the information on it is wiped when its not getting electricity anymore. So when we get non-volatile ram, we have instant bootup.

Does anyone have a link to that video of a PC booting from a RAM drive? IIRC it took less than ten seconds.

This thread is a perfect example of this one:

They do. It's called a Macintosh.

Yeah right. The fastest Mac takes longer than my average PC.

Mac = crap.

weak, and untrue. it wasn't even true BEFORE the switch to Intel- and now, boot time is identical.
if you're going to be elitist (which is TOTALLY permissible- hell, we mac fans have been the best at it for years), then at least get your facts straight.

anyway- even solid state hard disks don't provide instantaneous boot times- like someone else said, we're still limited by the RAM.
