First of all, don't you mean "fonetically"?

Second, nobody north of the Mason-Dixon line says ree-diculous. Ridicule is based on the same word, and nobody says ree-dicule anywhere.

So you're saying rediculous is how it should be?

What would that word mean exactly?

rediculous. adj. - To Diculous again.

That's perposturous!

It should be spelled rediculous because that is how it is pronounced.

Just like tomato should be spelled tomate'r.
Window should be spelled wind'r.
Potato should be spelled puhtate'r.

Because it isn't pronounced with an "i" in many portions of the world, it is pronounced with an "e". Thus, "rediculous" is how it SHOULD be spelled. We are just starting the ball rolling so that eventually dictionaries will end the silly "i" spelling version.

The solution, then, is that people need to start pronouncing words correctly.

See my later post. I feel that "solution" would be a horrible world. I'd much rather have the diversity.

The one pronunciation, one spelling, one dialect, one language, one hair color, one eye color, one race, everyone the same ideal would be a horrible nightmare for me. Spelling/grammar police are given the term "nazi" for a reason. Lets celebrate our differences, not chastise them. Difference is what makes us unique, different, fun, preserves our cultural heritage, etc.

Don't be annoyed by language differences. Don't have rants. Don't correct others. Instead be happy about the differences and cherish them. As long as the proper meaning got through in the communication, the differences are good. Only when the proper comminication is impossible due to the differences should the differences be corrected.

Another word people misspell often is the word "definitely." I always see "definately."

Rediculous should be reserved for describing something excessively red to the point that it is ridiculous.

Anyone who pronounces it "rediculous" should be legally obligated to add a y'all at the end of each sentence. Are you sure you don't pronounce it with a backwards e (aka schwa)?
