Why can't people sit through a 2-hour movie without stuffing their faces with noisy food?

I'm sick of it. I would seriously pay an extra 50% for a movie ticket in a theater where food is banned. There's nothing more annoying to me that noisy plastic wrappers, the sound of digging through pop corn, ice sloshing around in a big paper cup and the endless chewing sounds surrounding me when I'm trying to engross myself in a good film. It completely puts me off going to movie theaters now.

I wish more people felt the same way so that it would be profitable for a company to set up a no-food theater, even setting aside just one or two sessions a day were food is not allowed. Anyone agree?

If it weren't for the food, you'd pay more than 50% extra for the ticket. ;)

My brother has been a theater manager for years. He says that depending on the company, they only keep 25-50 cents of the ticket price. ALL of their revenue comes from food and theater rentals.

If you don't mind paying $30 for a ticket.

DVD @ home, FTW! :)

Rarely do I go to a theater. I'll just usually wait until the dvd release.

I can't think of any positive aspect of the whole 'theater experience.' High prices, expensive food, no beer, no pause button, noisy strangers, too much volume, all to sit 50 feet away from a huge screen. All good reasons to wait a few weeks and sit 5 feet from a smaller screen at my house.

I like the whole movie experience. Certain movies deserve to be seen on a big screen in a packed theater.

Luckily, where I live, things rarely escalate into fights and you can get up, turn around and order the chatty guy yapping on his cellphone to STFU or GTFO. Almost instantly, half a dozen other guys will stand up in solidarity and the offender will get the point and things will end without any violence. It's especially cool to do it to a guy with a date.

I like my city. :)

I never have any issues at the theater by me.

I never even hear the people around me usually.

Do you have super sonic hearing or something? I never get annoyed/bothered by that kind of stuff. I do get bothered by people kicking the back of my chair. At Transformers, I had to ask the guy in the back of me to stop kicking my chair. It's very annoying.

The audio in theaters is already horrendous, the popcorn doesn't really do anything to it. If you ever feel your seat shaking from bass or you feel hairs on your feet moving back and forth from the air movement of subwoofers in a theater, let me know, I'd like to experience that in a movie theater.

Movies in theaters must be seen with popcorn. Its a scientific law of the universe.

My only major beef with theaters in the children. I realize that when I got see a more kiddy movie, I should expect to deal with noisy rude children, and I can handle that. Its when parents bring young kids into R rated movies that piss me off.

I'd rather pay extra to have all children banned from theaters than to have food banned...

Only a couple of things at movie theaters bother me: children that won't shut up and adults that won't shut up. Other than that, I love going to theaters for any kind of action/horror flick; it's a must do experience for me. Comedies and most dramas I just wait for the rental.

Perhaps movie theaters in the States have changed or are different from live venues such as our own Stardust Theater but even in the 70's Sensurround could do just that and more!

It didn't achieve ridiculously low frequencies either. That's the biggest misconception that you must be able to produce 120dB at < 20Hz to really get that feeling of the room falling apart. (Although it cannot hurt IF engineered correctly from the start.)

Like Sensurround, we do have special effects generators that give the extra oomph to the sound when required. And like Sensurround, it's not something that can be put on common media like optical discs that everyone can enjoy in their homes. With the advent of larger storage, there would be room for such effects however the viewer would need the required playback hardware to enjoy them. (anything from lasers, fog machines, arc lamps, capacitor discharge IR lamps, electro-hydraulic actuators, etc.)

So when that alien breaks out of his cage and screams, you feel (and smell!) his breath on your face and the piercing scream makes the hair on your neck stand up! :D

Honestly, I've never really been bothered--or even noticed, after the first few minutes of the movie--food-related noise in a theater. The only thing that somewhat irks me is people talking loudly on their cellphones, which happens only very rarely.

Then again, I only go out to the movies maybe twice a year, so I'm probably not a representative sample.

I honestly don't remember hearing any of that in the last few movies I've been to.
