Why can't people ping me or connect to me?

This is very wierd
I have cable internet, and when others try to ping me they get no replies. When they try to connect to a gameserver i'm running, they're unable to.
However, i am able to receive icq file transfers, and dcc transfers (from irc).

I am NOT behind a firewall, or router
I am connected to a switch, and i lease my own ip (from my isp)
I have another computer that is also connected to the switch and it leases its own ip (from my isp)
Both computers have 2 network cards (one ip from my isp, and a 2nd local ip)

Any ideas?
thx in advance

Are you running ZoneAlarm, Black Ice, Win XP, or *nix?

Some of the *nix distributions have some firewall functionality enabled at primary-load-time, WinXP might have some firwewall functionality enabled.

Check with the ISP, maybe they are filtering....can you Ping out to the default gateway and/or the DNS servers?

It might also be that you are sneding, but (for whatever reason) the Echo Reply can't make it back in to the originator.

Do you have any capability for catching a trace to see what specific traffic is being sent/received?

Let us know...

The man said, "I am NOT behind a firewall".

Quad, I suggest that you talk to your ISP. Sounds like an ISP problem.
Also, you haven't mentioned whether your second computer shows similar symptoms.

Thanks guys.

i HAD zonealarm installed, but i never ran it. and it never started up when windows loaded. but apparently it was running something in the background, like a monitor or something, that was preventing the pings. so i uninstalled it and everything is fine now.

thx again

Neener neener....

Didn't you have this same problem some months back??

It's easy to forget stuff like that...no big deal. I do it all the time, but I forget that I do it all the time...and keep doing it.

Take care, Happy Holidays.
