why can't my computers see each other?

i have a win2k machine, trying to link to another ME machine with a crossover cable. but I can't make them detect each other. i think. in win2k I get a little icon showing my connection is sending packets at 10mbps (this is the limit of the slower card on the other machine) and it has a cross through it if I turn the other machine off. so it seems mechanically working, but I just can't get them to recognize each other.

Hmm.. Are you using TCP/IP? If so, try to ping the two machines. If you get reply, then your network settings are likely to be correct. In that case, make sure you enable file and printer sharing and perhaps being on the same workgroup.

If the computers won't ping each other, then you may have a bad hardward/cable/etc, or wrong network configuration.
