why can't I sign up for gmail?

it seems like this would be a repost, but I can't find it. sorry if it is

isn't gmail is "beta"? doesn't beta mean open to the public? why can't I get an test acct?

"Beta" does not mean public. Do you think MS publishes all of the beta versions of Windows as free to the public?

Beta means it's still in the testing and debugging phase.
It has nothing to do with whether it's public or private.

Dude SP2 for WinXP is still considered beta by me ;)
