Why can't I see other computers through the same LinkSys router? Aren't we on the same network?

Here's the deal. My roommates and I are on the same LinkSys Router, the 4 port model. Since we have 5 people I needed to use a hub to connect the last person. That's done, no big deal. The problem comes when trying to be able to see each other on the network. Doesn't the linksys router have it's own built in switch? Yes, right? So I should be able to see my roommate's computer and they should be able to see mine. Problem is, they don't - and I can't. So right now I'm trying to back up some of my computer files so that I can reformat my hard drive. What kind of settings do I need so that my roommates' computers will be able to see my computer?

First off, how do you have that switch hooked up? And how many pc's do you have connected to it? If just one, then you have too many connected to the router. With the 4port router, you have four ports or three ports and an uplink. Use ports 1 & 2 for pc's, port 3 for the hub (connect to uplink on hub) and 4 for future expansion. Connect pc 3, 4, and 5 to the switch. This should give you all a working connection to the router. All cables should be standard (not crossover).

If you want to share files/folders, you need to enable file sharing with windows. You also should put them all in the same workgroup (WORKGROUP is the standard for windows).

Let me know what you currently have configured, can go from there.

All the computers are under the same workgroup - and we are all able to share the internet just fine. It's just that we can't see each other on the network.

Well, do you have file/print sharing enabled? Do you have files/folders shared? If not, they wont show up. If so, try doing Start->Find->Computers and then type in the name of one of your friends computers. Does it show up?

Start with two computers, get them working. It's easier to start small and work your way up. Make sure you have the same protocols installed on each computer (netbui or whatever).

Network properties... right click on "Network Neighborhood" or "My Network Places" or whatever you have it named. Add. Protocols. Microsoft. Netbui.

You don't need Netbeui to be seen in the network, TCP/Ip is more than fine, each pc must have a HDD or a folder shared, plus enable file and printer sharing, and the LAN MUST have the same workgroup name.
