Why cant i ping this computer?

I'm not able to ping my friend's computer which I guess is on the same network.........I can say this coz the first two sets in the ip address is same for both of us.........


Here's my connection details:
IP Address: same.same.1.138
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: same.same.1.254

and this is my friend's settings:
IP Address: same.same.3.34
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: same.same.3.1

can somebody help? I've tried asking in numerous forums but none of them have been able to help me out........

This does not necessarily mean that you are on the same subnet. I believe it would only hold true if it were a Class B address, and possibly Class A. But, it you are on a Class C, the first three octets would have to be the same. Also, note that your default gateways are different.

I don't know the particulars, but from what I can see it looks like you are on different segments. The network portion of your respective IP's is not the same. If that is true then there is likely at least one router between the two of you. ICMP could be filtered on the router. It's not uncommon and would make it impossible to ping each other.

how bout some more details about the physical setup and location of the pc's? OS?

Both of us are using winxp pro.............the distance between us is approximately 10 miles........both of us use the same isp.......its ethernet technology i guess........no cable/dsl routers involved.....all i have at my end is a cat 5 cable and a nic........and that applies to my friend too....

Can both of you browse the internet...if you can then you are ping the incorrect address.

Are you or friend using a firewall? Change the filter rule to accept icmp if there are firewall between the to of you.

Run netstat -r or ipconfig /all at dos prompt to get the correct IPs mask & gateway.

Try pinging your gateway.

Try tracert -d xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx at dos prompt to see where you get to befor you loses the ping packets.

You mean neither of you are using routers, correct?

Ethernet has nothing to do with this. According to the info you gave, you are not on the same subnet. There is at least one router in between your machines. It could be that ICMP has been blocked at the router. This would block ICMP ping and tracert. XP pro has a built-in firewall, are you using that? If so, I'm not certain, but I believe the default settings block ICMP. Check that if you have the firewall enabled.

Yes both of us use the internet and we have no problems with that....................I just changed my OS to WinMe and tried it again without any luck(not that i expect it to ping since i changed the OS)...................none of us are using a firewall.............I can ping my gateway and my friend can ping his gateway without any problems

Neither one of us have them installed at our homes.............

and guys is it a risk for me to give out my real ip address here so that I can make the problem much more clearer?

I wouldnt put my ip address in here, especially if I wasnt using a firewall. Did you try the traceroute (tracert)? See where that stops.

I cant imagine an isp blocking icmp at a router. Doesnt make sense to me, although its not necessarily a bad thing. Also, for a short while some cable/dsl providers were not allowing thier customers to be able to connect to each other, but that must have changed by now.

Yes both of us can ping anandtech without any problem at all...............

No we are not able to ping each other's gateways............

The packets runout at stage 5............the same thing is happening to my friend too...........one very interesting thing I found is that both of us get the same ip at the end of the tracert command................the last ip in the tracert command before it started showing stars was the same ip which my friend got too............I guess this is the ip address which is causing the problem.........any ideas guys?

someone please assure me that posting my ip will not be a problem........I really have no problem in posting the routing table except for that coz. I've read at many places that posting ip addresses is dangerous ........

hmm that's something u'll have to decide

if worst comes to worst, you can always pop another network card in and u'll get a new ip (because of the change in mac address). i think the best place to find an answer to your question is from your ISP. call up tech support and tell them that you and your friend start losing packets at the same ip. ask the tech support guy if he has an email address where you an mail the output of the tracert.
